All aboard the taco train! It seems the capital just can’t get enough of Mexican food right now, and Tacos Padre is the latest taqueria in which to get your fix.
Now open at Borough Market, Tacos Padre is the brainchild of chef Nicholas Fitzgerald, who just so happens to have previously worked at Pujol in Mexico City (who are an impressive 12th on the World’s 50 Best list doncha know) as well as our very own Breddos Tacos.
It’s a pretty chill affair by day when they’re solely serving tacos and frozen margaritas to punters perched on bar stools. With just four to choose from, we’d recommend trying them all. To give you a flavour of what to expect, the beef short rib suadero comes with aged beef fat morita salsa, onion, and coriander; the pork cochinita is paired with habanero onions and the chicken with black beans and salsa guacamole. Veggies and meat-eaters alike won’t want to miss the cauliflower al pastor with toasted coconut and salsa macha. All the meat is super tender and the cauliflower nice and spicy. Sides include simple grilled corn with pasilla mixe (a type of chilli) and red guacamole with warm tortilla chips.
Come the weekend they shake things up, roll out tables and serve a full dinner service. Using the very best suppliers (Ginger Pig for meat, Fin & Flounder for seafood), highlights include crab tostada with guajillo and tamarind; Baja-style fried fish tacos with white cabbage and fennel, morita, and oak-smoked cod’s roe emulsion and Iberico presa al pastor, with burnt habanero pickled pineapple. All salsas, rubs and sauces are made in-house daily and you can even buy a packet of their fresh tortillas to take home. We can’t promise you’ll get quite as good results in your own kitchen but we can try!
It’s a fantastic time to visit the notoriously busy Borough Market as all the traders are out in force but the tourists haven’t quite returned to peak levels so you really get all the vibes without any of the slowcoach rage (just us?). If you’re looking for an authentic slice of super fresh Mexican food right here in London, Tacos Padre is surely your best bet.
