Mayfair’s oldest pub, the Running Horse gets whipped into shape.
A Mayfair fixture since 1738, the Running Horse public house will reopen this autumn following a loving restoration to its former glory.
Frustrated by the lack of ‘real pubs’ in the area, owners James Chase and Dominic Jacobs have set about creating an authentic, timeless drinking experience that will showcase Britain’s finest ales and seasonal ingredients.
Alongside a revolving selection of seasonal beers, the Running Horse will also be the first site in the UK to serve Chase’s celebrated and award winning vodka, gin and liqueurs.
This uncomplicated focus on quality will be applied to the Running Horse’s food, with former Masterchef: The Professionals quarter-finalist Andrew Justice set to saddle up and head the kitchen – creating a menu that reflects the pub’s heritage and stays true to its historic surroundings.
Key dishes are set to include The Chopped Burger with Jockey whips (chips) alongside Jacobs Ladder, cooked low and slow, the Running Horse will offer welcome sanctuary from its busy central London location.
Not content with offering Mayfair one all-new drinking destination, the Davies St site will also house The Whip – a refined, upstairs cocktail bar that will hark back to the glory days of the Kentucky Derby.
Set to be upholstered in Jockeys’ silk, the bookable upstairs bar will take its cue from the celebrated drink of the Derby – the julep. Served in pewter ‘tins’, The Whip’s julep menu will encompass seasonal British flavours and home made preserves to create a series of signature serves unlike any of those currently found on the London cocktail scene.
James Chase on The Whip:
“Dom and I have always had a vision to create something we feel is game-changing – a new experience for London that allows us to showcase a few forgotten techniques along the way. We will stock a host of home made ingredients alongside the very best, independent spirits, offering our guests the chance to learn about each one of our suppliers.”
Dominic met James four years ago during a trip to the Chase distillery whilst working as the Bars Manager at Harvey Nichols, Knightsbridge. Quickly realising they both shared a passion for British ingredients and artisan alcohol, they have since worked hard to bring their vision to life, finding the right property and sourcing all-important UK suppliers.
The Running Horse and The Whip are both odd-ons favourite to romp home in the Mayfair Stakes this Autumn.
