Vintwined, founded by Neil Deacon, is a new company that focuses on wine-lead dining events. All wines are selected to demonstrate the quality and diversity of their region and form the inspiration for the menu each event.

We went along to their ‘This is English’ event held at Stepney City Farm, an evening to celebrate the best of English wines. Throughout the evening we were served four courses, each developed specifically to complement the wine chosen.

To begin we were served charred mackerel with cucumber and horseradish along with a glass of Chapel Down Bacchus Reserve (a personal fave). This wine was fresh and citrusy which lifted the mackerel and paired beautifully with the cucumber.

We then tried Gifford’s Hall Bacchus from Suffolk. With gooseberry and elderflower notes, this was paired with scallops, hay baked celeriac, samphire and shellfish burnt butter. The scallops were perfectly cooked and the hay smoke flavour in the celeriac brought out the flavours of the wine.

The only red of the evening, we then sampled Hush Heath Pinot Noir. This is a very light red wine, the colour is closer to rosé than most reds we know. Very light, it has hints of red berries and raspberries. For us, it was a little too light for a red wine but it was well matched with wood pigeon, jersey royals, truffled asparagus, wild mushroom, roasted sprouting broccoli and almonds.

To finish we were served apple tart with spiced cream, and what better way to wash it down than with a cider! A Chapel Down Curios Cider, to be exact.

The evening was a lot of fun, all of the food was absolutely delicious and featured many great British ingredients. It is also a great way to try some English wines that you may not otherwise come across in most restaurants.

The next event will take place on the 27th May and you can buy tickets here.

In June, Vintwined will begin a residency at The Clerkenwell Kitchen offering their English wine menu. As well as the dishes and wines we tried, there will be new offerings throughout the run. There will be the opportunity to try the set menu, or individual dishes can be chosen from the a la carte menu.
