We told you about fun new restaurant, Hungry Donkey’s soft launch a few weeks ago so thought we would go along to check it out properly!
With its uplifting yellow fittings and glass front, we think this place is well suited for a sunny lunchtime feast. Some of the dishes on the menu were completely new to us but luckily enthusiastic staff gave us some great advise.
The starters and sides were our favourite part of the menu so make sure you order plenty of these – we’d recommend the deep fried saganaki cheese – this can only be described as the crispy bit you find on a cheese toastie – very naughty but totally addictive.
Zucchini fritters were super tasty too, we loved them smothered with tzatziki. In fact we smothered the generous portions of dip on everything, we were spooning them straight into our mouths at one point. Don’t forget to order the feta dip too, along with piles of pita to scoop everything up. Pricing may seem a bit odd here with dips charged at £4-5 but actually the bowls are huge and should be treated as a small dish in their own right.
In case you didn’t feel like you’d had enough feta, the chips get the Greek makeover too with a sprinkling of oregano.
The souvlaki pita wraps represent good value, all under £7 – go for the Greek sausage – a combo of pork and boar.
Fasolakia lacked any real depth for me and was a very simple tomato based stew with green beans, potato and you guessed it – more feta!
However if you’re after a veggie dish the Moussaka looked delicious – we got food envy!
After this cheese fest you’d forgive us for feeling pretty full so we declined dessert on this occasion – the starters alone would make a great lunch!
An enthusiastic effort to introduce London to authentic Greek food in a modern happy environment.
