Zona N16

*Update* Zona has now closed.

Newly opened in the heart of Stoke Newington, Zona offers an interesting selection of food options with, sunglasses at the ready, a small but perfectly formed terrace at the back that actually catches the sun! Sun seekers rejoice!

Located almost directly opposite the end of Stoke Newington Church St, Zona opened at the end of March this year and despite the amount of competition nearby, was busy when we arrived for our lunch – always a good sign. Being a sunny Sunday, we sat outside on one of the three tables, definitely grab one if they’re available. It’s always nice to be able to sit outside without any traffic whizzing past.

Not quite ready for a drink, we were both tempted by one of Zona’s interesting juices. Orange, grapefruit and lime was tart but not overwhelming and extremely refreshing on a warm day. The fennel, apple and pear juice was drunk in a matter of minutes and is apparently a very popular choice.

The food menu at Zona contains many of the classic dishes we’ve come to expect at brunch – avocado on toast with a poached egg, pancakes, Eggs Benedict – however, each has it’s own spin on the traditional. For example, the Eggs Benedict comprise poached eggs, avocado and hollandaise sauce but are served on a buttery croissant with a choice of pulled bbq pork, salt beef, smoked salmon or jerk chicken.

Tempted as we were by the eggs, we fancied something a bit different. Smoked mackerel, beetroot puree, fresh horseradish and rocket on sourdough was a light choice and the mackerel was excellent quality. The New York Open Top Ruben (pulled salt beef, grilled cheese, gherkins and mustard on sourdough) was delicious and filling.

Now serving a bottomless prosecco brunch for £25, we’ll be back another sunny Sunday to try some more of the menu. Just remember if you’re booking, ask for outside!
