The Digest – How to Valentine in 2019

On the whole, us Brits aren’t known for our showy displays of sentimentalism or romance. Ask around, do you know anyone actually going out for dinner on Valentine’s Day itself? Even if they are, I’ll bet they downplay the response – “Oh yea, we’ll maybe just go to our local little Italian/pub/whatever”, but we haven’t booked anywhere yet”.

This year, although it will be our first as each other’s ‘fiancé” – puke, if there’s a more cringey word in the English language, I’d love to hear it – we’re not being particularly romantic either. I’ll be getting the 06.54 Eurostar to Paris for a whistle stop meeting, alone, whilst he’ll be boarding a flight to Texas with the lads for more bromance than romance.

Do we care? Not a jot. Why? Because I’d advocate that it’s the everyday micro displays of romance that make you closer. Buying the Sunday papers for me when you pop to the shops? Literally one of the most romantic things you can do. Come back with a loaf of fresh sourdough to boot – I’m yours.

Instead we’ll be staying in on Sunday night and taking the time to indulge in this gorgeous collaboration between Farmison and Berry Brothers & Rudd. Like most people nowadays, I’m very conscious about my meat intake, so when I do eat it, I want to know it’s as ethical as can be – and there’s nowhere better, in my opinion, than this online butchers. We’ve gone for the Côte de Bœuf Devotees box which includes a 90-day dry aged heritage breed piece of beef big enough for two, along with a pot of Cartwright & Butler mustard and Baby Kechil salt taken from the Lombok Strait, along with a beautiful bottle of BB&R’s Chianti and a recipe card which tells you how to throw it all together. Bliss. Perhaps we’ll even snuggle up under the blanket (mainly because the boilers on the blink), hell – I may even light a candle!

Meanwhile on the 13th we’ll be celebrating Galantine’s Day with a bunch of our gal pals – because coupled up or single, a day to celebrate the great women in your life is always a good idea. We’ll be repurposing a couple of M&S Dine in for £20 deals which gets you a starter, main, side, desert, prosecco AND a box of chocolates, for easy midweek entertaining at just a tenner a head. Sorted. See what’s on the menu here. And if you haven’t seen it yet, it’s well worth checking out their *ahem* love sausage
