This October, Spice Market, Soho’s hottest South-East Asian restaurant is launching its new, ‘Barley & Buns’ pop-up, which will run until Christmas.
Barley & Buns offers a simple menu of six Taiwanese Gua Bao-style buns. Each bun is filled with Spice Market inspired fusion flavours which include soy glazed short rib, apple and jalapeño; crispy soft shell crab with Asian slaw and sriracha; and Malaysian vegetable, crispy garlic, ginger and sweet soy.
Alongside, a selection of six beer-based cocktails are on offer, each designed to complement the buns’ exotic fillings. These include the Ginger Shandy, a spicy mixture of Old Tom Gin, fresh line, ginger lime base beer syrup and London Pilsner, and the Clara and Tom, a mix of Tanqueray gin, fresh lemon, simple syrup, Bitter & Twisted. We can highly recommend both of these drinks, they were so light and refreshing and matched perfectly with the flavours of the buns.
Each of the buns is packed with flavour and has just enough of a kick of beautifully blended spices. We couldn’t get enough of the Short Rib, Crab and Chicken (crispy Korean chicken, gochujang chilli sauce, yuzu pickles) buns. Every week there will also be a special ‘Top bun of the week’ showcasing different flavours from around Asia.
And if you aren’t ready to roll out of the door after all of that, make sure you try the Crispy Steam Buns. A small doughnut-style bun filled with kaya coconut jam and rolled in soy sugar – delicious!
Barley & Buns will be serving non-stop from 12pm to 11pm everyday on the ground floor of Spice Market. Get yourselves down there for a bun or three!
