alto by San Carlo at Selfridges

A few weeks ago, with the sun beating down on us during this glorious heatwave we’ve been experiencing, we were lucky enough to attend the Chefs Dinner: Viaggio in Italia at alto by San Carlo – the restaurant on the roof of Selfridges.

The exclusive Italian-themed five course dinner was cooked by a mega team of Michelin-starred Italian chefs (they had seven stars between them!). In partnership with Identità Golose, each course was paired with the perfect local Italian wine AND beer – yep, it got pretty boozy. Taking us on a culinary journey through Italy, from Lombardy to Milan, Rome, Florence, the Amalfi Coast, Nerano and Noto we made our way through the orange tree lined walkway to feast on the likes of pureed chickpeas with oozy taleggio, dusted with fig must. Risotto was pimped with prawn and veal and given a kick with powdered liquorice. We tucked into perfectly presented pasta, but not as you know it and snapper whilst pretending we were on the Mediterranean coast. In fact we were on the stunning rooftop at Selfridges, and although this particular event was a one-off, they’ve got lots going on this summer. Starting with…

Brose on the Roof by Veuve Clicquot

It’s running until 15th July (for that all important World Cup final!), challenging dumb stereotypes that just because you might like a nice glass of pink bubbles, you also want to catch the game. When there’s no match on Wimbledon will pick up the slack. There’s also table football if you’re feeling competitive and a light summer bite menu on offer.

After the sporting season is out of the way, attention is being turned to Australia Month, and they’ll be two special events to check out…

Australian Wine Tasting Evening – Wednesday 18th July

But THE most important info we can give you is this – to get to the rooftop restaurant, you’ll need to enter via the express lift in Fragrance on G. There ain’t a bigger buzz kill than finding yourself going up and down in the lift and getting nowhere – trust us.
