Back of the shop, behind the bookcase, down a windy staircase and past the dusty bottles and there you’ll find The Vault at Milroy’s of Soho.
Another secret cocktail bar? The Vault could surely blur amongst the many ‘secret’ bars that are tucked away around London. But this underground hideaway is saved by their commitment to quality whisky; add to this the barman’s passion for concocting his own bitters and you have a very special speakeasy indeed. We would hope for no less when you know that this bar is situated underneath Milroy’s – London’s oldest whisky shop.
I was expecting a crowded space with a fight for the bar staffs attention but was pleasantly surprised to find there were enough people to give it a buzz but not enough to make it uncomfortable. Though there can be a queue for the loo’s (interesting layout in there by the way gents)
The staff were all amazing – we were given a warm welcome, shown through the menu and given great suggestions. We were even offered a cheeky Starburst! From observing other customers with the staff it is clear that there is a commitment to good service, having fun and a massive, infectious, passion for whisky cocktails.
It’s hard to not want to work your way through every drink in their menu (which is entertainingly presented – loved that!) but one to maybe avoid (or try depending on your inclination) is a Hot and Cold concoction consisting of two drinks meant to be sipped in succession. The ‘Soho’s Light Touch’ should be on your definite to-do list; a golden rum, lime and mint concoction that was really refreshing.
So if you are ever in need of an intimate speakeasy away from the noise of Soho and are partial to a decent whisky cocktail or just great service and atmosphere; The Vault is your place!
