After a successful run on the street food circuit with KERB, Grace Regan’s SpiceBox is to open its first permanent location on 29th January 2019. Coming to Walthamstow’s foodie district, Hoe Street, SpiceBox will bring something entirely new to the area, with its all-vegan curry house featuring meat-free versions of Indian classics.
The menu is 100% vegan and packed with Indian flavours and spice to enhance the natural awesomeness of vegetables. The menu will be modern Indian with plenty of nods to the iconic British curry house, featuring classic dishes reimagined with a plant-based spin.
Highlights from the street bites section include the loaded onion bhaji with pickled onions, green chilli, date and tamarind chutney; pani puri filled with chickpeas and topped with sev (the long, thin crunchy strands!), Grace’s signature chutneys; and potato and pea samosa with house-made cucumber and mint raita.
From the mains there’s the ‘chickn’ tikka massala, a creamy curry house classic with tandoori ‘chickn’ pieces and crunchy green peppers; the SpiceBox classic jackfruit jalfrezi for those that like it spicy; and the brinjal bhaji with charred smoky aubergine and peas in a rich tomato gravy.
Of course a good curry is nothing without the sides and with crispy bombay potatoes, saag aloo and the signature tarka dhal (voted ‘best Dahl in Britain’ at The British Dahl Festival 2018), you’re not going to be disappointed.
To finish, there’s a banana chai doffle that we’ve got our eye on. The full dosa waffle is topped with chai-spiced grilled banana, chocolate sauce, toasted coconut flakes plus coconut and chocolate ice cream – yum!
No curry house would be complete without big bottles of Cobra beer and SpiceBox will be no different, offering the classic Cobra lager as well as the 0% non-alcoholic version and an IPA from Walthamstow’s own Wild Card Brewery. There’ll also be a small selection of red and white wines and cocktails including the chai-spiced cider; The mango lashi; the masala mojito; and the chai white russian. On the soft drinks side there’s mango lassi; lime soda served sweet or salty; thumb up Indian cola; masala chai; and turmeric latte.
SpiceBox will be launching in-house delivery in March 2019 and are aiming to run the UK’s first zero waste Indian takeaway and delivery scheme. Reusable tiffins will be sent out with each customer’s first order and then will be refilled by SpiceBox each time.
