Nestled amongst a row of restaurants and bars on Kingly Street, Shotgun BBQ would be easy to pass by if you weren’t paying attention. But venture inside and the low lighting and cosy booths create a welcoming atmosphere, the sort of place you could happily spend an evening.
Shotgun serves American style barbecue food. The fried chicken dinner promises you fried chicken, cornbread and all the fixins. Served family style, it doesn’t take long for the table to fill up with a selection of tasty dishes. To start we were served devilled eggs, pimiento cheese with Ritz crackers and dirty rice – a delicious combination of rice, spiced sausage, chicken liver, garlic and brown crab. We had to restrain ourselves from devouring everything too quickly, knowing what was on its way!
The main event consists of two pieces of fried chicken each (which, with the rest of the menu, is more than enough!), mac and cheese, creamed corn, green salad, and slaw. The fried chicken was perfectly cooked with a crispy coating and the creamed corn had a spicy kick which we love. The mac and cheese uses pasta shells which means you can scoop up more of the Guajillo and cheddar sauce with every bite.
But, save the best for last, the cornbread! Freshly baked, it’s served to the table in its skillet, still sizzling hot. It manages to be sweet, salty and buttery all at the same time and that is no bad thing! We could have eaten another whole loaf had we not already been stuffed!
Shotgun also offer a happy hour Monday to Thursday between 3pm and 7pm where you can get two for one on all cocktails – early dinner anyone?
