Part fishmonger, part casual dining; Prawn On The Lawn, is the latest must-visit establishment around Islington’s Upper Street – we all know how much amazing choice is around there, so that’s saying something!
…and if you don’t believe us then believe Tripadvisor’s prestigious restaurant poll that they have just topped!
Prawn On The Lawn began life as a seafood bar and fishmonger and has now been extended to include a 16 seater basement restaurant, serving only the freshest seafood and tapas-style fish dishes. With only an A1 cold-food licence, they serve creative plates including Scallop ceviche with chilli, coriander and passion fruit, seared tuna with chilli, spring onion, soy and mirin and their signature Prawn On The Lawn dish, as well as larger platters such as Fruits De Mer, sourced directly from day boats and fish markets in Devon and Cornwall.
With the restaurant just one part of a very extensive charming whole, Prawn On The Lawn is a fully-stocked fishmonger, with 29 year-old co-owner Rick Toogood prepping fish for walk-in customers to take home, alongside the restaurant dishes, as well as fully licenced to sell a range of wines, beers and prosecco. As educational as they are inventive, Prawn On The Lawn also offers private fish-filleting classes and wine tasting, as well as support for the Lobster Hatchery in Padstow, Cornwall.
Despite having had no formal food training, Toogood along with co-owner and fiancé Katie Collard, discover their dish inspiration from all avenues, including travelling and visiting other restaurants. With a passion for food ingrained in their blood with Cordon Bleu trained, and catering business mothers, Toogood was previously Assistant Manager at Fishworks, becoming their youngest General Manager in the group before realising his and Katie’s joint dream of owning their own restaurant with Prawn On The Lawn.
With a Graphic Design degree also under his belt, Toogood designed the entire shop layout and interior, completely re-fitting the site to make full use of the limited space. Neat space-saving touches include the rather novel and ingenious dish hanging baskets and trendy oak barrels for tables. With Katie soon to become a full-time fishwife having left her Marketing role at Sony Music, Prawn On The Lawn looks certain to maintain it’s position as one of the most exciting restaurants and fishmongers in London!
