Having been up and running for just over a year now it was frankly embarrassing that we hadn’t made the short trip south to check out Peckham’s Mr Bao.
And we are SO glad we did! As soon as we opened the door we were hit by the cosy restaurant’s fun times buzz. This is just the kind of place we want in our hood for a hot date or a girly catch up. Fluffy buns and banging cocktails basically sums up our idea of a great night.
You’ll find a paper menu on your table for you to fill in with an Ikea sized pencil. Start with some Taiwanese snacks to share before ordering a couple of Bao’s fo yo self.
At these prices (mostly under three quid!) we were tempted to order the lot but the table didn’t look big enough.
As our party of two was half veggie (she being full veggie, me not) it’s worth mentioning we had no trouble finding tons we wanted to share. We opted for spicy smacked cucumber and a dinky bowl of sesame spinach which was ideal with the sweet potato chips drizzled with wasabi mayo. One of our favourite dishes of the night in fact! Tenderstem broccoli with ponzu mayo completed our veggie starters.
But hey – we’re at Mr Bao – so how was the Bao? We hear ya!
Their signature bun is bursting with slow braised pork, pickles and liberally sprinkled with peanuts. There’s no dainty way of eating this but it was worth getting messy for all of its unctuous glory.
You’ll also find a special Bao on the menu, while we were there it was slow cooked lamb with the classic combo of mint sauce in a perfectly fluffy bun. From the lack of evidence we are going to say the veggie Bao (Mushroom or Tofu) went down well too.
We were too excited by our Love Potion (it was Valentine’s Day) that we forgot about ordering dessert. A pretty good excuse to come back.
