We LOVE Sanderson – those lips, that courtyard! How can you not! So we were delighted to try out their brand new take on the traditional afternoon tea.
Celebrating 150 years of Alice in Wonderland, Sanderson has re-launched its delicious Mad Hatter’s Afternoon tea – and boy is it good.
We tumbled down the rabbit hole and didn’t want to return to reality! Or perhaps that was the champagne. Ahem.
The menu is hidden inside an old vintage book, teapots come complete with crowns, and forget a soggy sandwich. Here the savoury plate includes Scottish smoked salmon, quail egg and caviar scotch egg as well as Cornish crab and herb éclair. Yep, that’s right, no gimmicks here. We could have eaten a whole plate of the mini ham and smoked applewood croque-monsieur.
Although we couldn’t because the sweet plates go on and on for ever more. Dessert lovers, rejoice! You’ve found the dream way to while away a few hours.
Ok, so obviously you’ll get the obligatory scone with plenty of Cornish clotted cream & jam but after that the rule book got torn up. Try Alice’s Drink Me potion – will it make you shrink? You’ll have to find out for yourself.
Go easy on those magic marshmallow mushrooms! Eat the Banana bread-and-butterly quickly before it flys away! Defeat the Queen of Hearts Oreo cookie soldier before she chops of your head. Keep an eye on the time with The White Rabbit’s pocket watch macaroon – you wouldn’t want to be late for a very important date.
Things get curiouser and curiouser with the carrot meringue so take a deep breath and inhale the aromatic, specially blended teas which accompanies it all. We adored how you could smell each blend before making your selection.
The surprises continue but we don’t want to spoil it for you.
It’s safe to say, this is our new favourite afternoon tea in London!
Tea is served daily and is priced between £48 and £65 per person excluding service, £35 per child for children 4 – 11 years old.
