The Lighterman, Kings Cross

Crummbs London Restaurant Reviews The Lighterman

Remember a few weeks back when February switched on summer mode and we all walked around giddy with excitement, sun on our skin? Well we picked THAT weekend to visit the beautiful The Lighterman. You know, the one slap bang on Regent’s Canal, on Kings Cross’ Granary Square. We’ve admired it from afar for ages now, so are thrilled to announce that this gorgeous little alfresco spot is every bit as good as it looks.

Pub, dining room and bar, The Lighterman spans three floors with a modern, industrial interior and floor to ceiling windows with the most glorious river-side views which really come into their own in the sun. Named after the Victorian workers who operated ‘lighters’ – flat-bottomed goods barges on London’s canals – this is the second venue from Open House (Percy & Founders, Fitzrovia) and their most ambitious project to date. The pavilion style building was designed by RIBA Stirling Prize winning architects Stanton Williams, who have contributed to the wider regeneration of King’s Cross with projects including Central St Martins and King’s Cross Square.

The menu centres around British classics, so you’re bound to find something for even the fussiest of eaters.

We started with a couple of suitably summery spritzes from the cocktail list, before ordering bitesize goat’s cheese croquettes ‘for the table’ which arrived with cranberry compote. The roast menu was strong – we tucked into a substantial portion of spit roast chicken with a whopping Yorkshire pud, roasted carrots, parsnips and golden roast potatoes with plenty of that all-important gravy. A glass of crisp, cold chardonnay slipped down a treat. We’re blaming the sunshine. There’s also sirloin beef, pork belly or lamb shoulder, all accompanied by the appropriate condiment – horseradish, apple or mint sauce, respectively. Veggies will love the mushroom heavy nut roast which comes with its very own veggie gravy and all the trimmings. Phew!

Sadly we had to rush off before we could be tempted by dessert – but with the likes of spiced bread & butter pudding and hot chocolate brownie, it certainly gives us a great reason to return (not that we needed an excuse!)
