CLAW Food, Finsbury Avenue

Starting life as a street food concept, CLAW has now set up shop in a shipping container in new foodie hub, Finsbury Avenue. If you’re not familiar with the area yet – get to know! – because its location near Liverpool Street make it a super handy one to have up your sleeve and all the cool kids are moving in – Wolf, Yolk and Sub-Cult to name but a few.

So as you might have gathered from the shipping container – it’s a low key affair, ideal for when you want something a little fancy for lunch but don’t want to break the bank. With the option to eat in or takeaway, there’s literally no excuse not to have lobster for lunch. Hurrah! In fact we were totally blown away by the quality of the seafood, especially with the accessible price points.

We gorged ourselves on the softest brioche rolls, stuffed to the brim with fresh Salcombe crab, baby gem lettuce and lashings of lemon mayo. There’s also the option of lobster and crayfish, this time with sesame mayo. We loved both.

Even the fries are given the seafood treatment and topped with a good dollop of crab meat and paprika. Oh and don’t miss the totally decadent crab cheese toastie – I mean, just look at it – game changer. Open from 7am for breakfast, why wouldn’t you grab a smoked maple bacon and scallop English muffin on the way to work? We literally can’t think of a better start to the day.

As well as all that, the team at CLAW are hosting a one-off Seafood & Craft Beer Feast next Thursday (10th August). The pairing dinner will bring together some of the UK’s top craft breweries to showcase a range of unique brews alongside a six-course menu of exceptional British seafood dishes created by head chef Josh Levy. Which is especially exciting as they don’t normally open for dinner.

The event kicks off at 7:00pm and will feature a selection of top beers including Siren Craft Brewery’s Pomelmocello, Magic Rock Brewery’s Salty Kiss Gose and a rather impressive entry from The Wild Beer Co, Of the Sea – made with Lobsters, cockles, sea salt and Kombu.

The menu, which is a departure from the regular offering at CLAW will feature inventive dishes such as Crab Beignets with pickled sea vegetables, XO Crab and Kelp & Cured egg yolk. Josh has also conjured two dessert beer pairings including a millionaire shortbread paired with the Wild Beer Co’s chocolate and salted caramel milk stout – the perfect taste to end the night.

Tickets are priced at £35pp and includes a beer pairing with each course.
