In the year that the UK celebrates 40 years of punk, W London – Leicester Square has announced the launch of the most rebellious afternoon tea in town, the Anarch-Tea.
Part of the citywide Punk London event series, the Anarch-Tea, created by W London’s talented pastry chef, Rachel Newman, combines quintessential British flavours with bold punk designs. Presented on a tea stand built using vinyl records, each dish represents an iconic song from the subversive movement.
Evoking the 1970’s and the start of the punk counterculture era, the cakes are themed around iconic punk music including ‘God Save the Queen – The Sex Pistols’: a red, white and blue Battenburg, complete with a marzipan icing crown, and ‘Shut-Up – The Stranglers’: a pair of red lips made from a strawberry mousse, sealed with a silver zip. Other treats include ‘Going Round in Circles – Alternative TV’: a silver studded Swiss Roll, and the ‘Sigue Sigue Sputnik – 21st Century Boy’: a Mohican-inspired cake, celebrating the iconic hairstyle of the era. The cakes looked so perfect we almost couldn’t eat them.
Sip some tea or if you’re feeling a bit more of a rebel, order a ‘’Lust for Life’’ cocktail with Cachaça, passion fruit and fresh lime, it will go down a treat!
It all takes place in the W Lounge which has been transformed into a glam rock den for the occasion with plush velvet sofas with chequered black/white and plaid pillows, a wall covered in printed plates with icons from the 70’s and a dj spinning tunes from The Ramones to the Clash and the Damned. At £30 per person with hot drinks (or add a tenner for a cocktail) we think everyone wanting some posh punk treats should check out this AnarchTea at the W!
